Towards the end of 83, the Silver Streak was slated for replacement, if I remember correctly, the plan was to replace the Silver Streak with the Pacer 500 (same basic set up/components-different name) which was going to be (and subsequently was) made in Taiwan and was to be full Chromoly, not half mild steel like the Silver Streak. It was supposed to tie into the whole Indy car theme started with the Formula 1 but the Indy car tie-in kind of fizzled out, partly because Sandy was not happy with the end result of the Formula 1.
so at th end of 83 the silver streak was up for replacement because sandy was not happy with the f1
and needed a new modle for the indy car theme? so was the f1 the indy bike for the the yr 83?
what yr did the f1 come out?

zoo.....I'm thinking your frame was manufactured in December '83 and sold in '84. From what I understand about Japanese DB serials is the first number is the year and the first letter is the month manufactured. Do your forks have a serial as well (inside dropout)? Here's a DB ad from BMXA Jan '84. I don't have any of the late '83 issues, so I can't say when the Formula 1 exactly came out...but I seem to remember right around '84.......

Your forks look like they were made in Dec '83 as well. As far as the 500th Formula made.....i'm no expert on the back end of DB serials but it kinda looks that way...
I bet Ramon would have a more definitive answer to all of this...hopefully he can chime in here...

Wouldn't it be cool if I could get rich from Plagiarism suits on O.S. ??
(Just yanking your chain there Zoo)
"abombone" is right, you have an 83' model, and you have the more desireable of the two F1's that were released, the one with the red "razor" decals, even though it may have been purchased in 1984, the serial # puts it at being made in 1983.
Remember...
3L0500
3=last digit of the year made
L=batch number
0500=500th frame made that year.
These bikes were pretty exotic, like the Turbo, and like the Turbo were very sensitive to the sun's U.V. rays, the brake lever/caliper, hubs and crank spider were originally black (but weren't annodized hence the sensitivity to sunlight) usually these bikes are found with said parts faded to color more like a brownish-bronze (sometimes the headset cups suffer from this too), trust me, the parts on this bike were originally more of a black/blue color like the finish on a Turbo.
A lot of the chrome Araya 1.5's from these bikes didn't fare well either, lots of pitting and peeling.
Anyway, hope this helps.
And as Sandy would say:
"Thanks for sharing!" :32:
