A long time friend and I just got reacquainted and he has a 89-90 floval.
He is layed off and wants to gather funds for a decent Christmas.
My first thought was that I could give him what he was asking for it and then put in up for sale and hope for the best.
But the more I thought about it, it became clearer that I don't have money to let it hang out so that he should offer it for the right price.
Now, I know that the right price depends on a lot of things and pics really help.
But here's what I know.
it's a non 990 SE 24" floval that has a custom paint job. I know that the paint job kills some of the value because a guy that would want it has to have it taken back to alum. Fine. It has profiles, and a quill type stem. It also has se cruiser bars I believe.
Suzue sealed hubs on araya rims.
So I know that it's "what someone will pay for it", but I know this guys daughter and he can use a decent price for this and I'm not the guy to be asking you for your knowledge without true need.
So are there any ball park figures that we can use here for him?
Thanks for any replies.
Justin

I know that you know, but pictures would certainly help, at least me anyway. I'm always looking for something.

Seems like a "what is my bike worth" thread without actually asking the question.

It was a "what is that bike worth" question as indicated by the question "So are there any ball park figures that we can use here for him?"
Was that not clear?
Thanks for the kind words, thumperpilot.. If he decides to sell it and to get a membership on here to try to sell it, then that is exactly the place where he'll likely try to sell it.
I'm not trying to sell it so posting a question like this in the for sale section seems to not be the right thing to do yeah?
So, then how long do you have to be a member, or how many posts do you need to have before you can ask what something is worth?
I was thinking that asking once in over four years of being a member here might give some credence to my question.
Other folks get lots of responses.. why not this one?
Please let me know the difference and I'll look for that, otherwise, it's simply unhelpful.
Then again, if none of you know what a frame/fork go for alone, then that would also explain the lack of answers.

Put it on ebay with an unreasonable reserve and see what it brings. I think everyone remembers a time when folks would come to the site just to ask what something is worth. Honestly there is no better answer to your question that it's worth whatever someone will give. Start high and if someone comes close to what you deem reasonable take it.

I have no problem with this kind of question in this context. It's Vintage that has a policy to squash these queries.
What I mean by "this context" is that we know the person asking and how they roll. If it was a complete noob or otherwise non-participator, we might assume that they are making a veiled attempt to make a sale.
Justin has no need to veil... he's a site supporter and could have gone right to for sale if he had been intending to sell it outright.
He specifically mentions that his friend would contribute and do the sale forum if it comes down to it.
I'm sure if anybody had been studying the 89-90 flovals on ebay and could pin down a price range... it would have already been posted. I suspect no one is quite sure how to answer. The custom paint complicates as well.
Anyway... as I say, there's no problem here.

Thanks Steve, and it's just that. I don't have a clue what this might be worth and I was relying on the community to give us a gauge.
Sorry for asking for a price, but with this persons daughter involved, I would rather have an idea of a price he should ask for, than put it on ebay or other means without a reserve or BIN price that could be much less than it was worth.
I don't think that looking out for a friend should be shunned. I'm not a drive by poster of '"what us my bike worth", but I was asking for an honest answer if it could be found with the limited knowledge that I had.

I've been here for a few years and have never asked what a piece or bike is worth until now.
Can I get just a piece of slack?
Yes I know that it's been asked and that's why I prefaced it in the initial question.
That does not change the fact that I wish the best for my friend.

I'd say about 500 to 600 with the info you gave. I think a lot of ebayers may dig a custom paint job too. It may not be a bad idea to part it out with no reserve auctions. Most would agree if it isn't a true survivor you can get more piece by piece than for the whole bike. Bad thing is it's a buyers market right know on ebay. Good luck

ANYTHING is only worth 'what you can get someone to pay for it!
It may be worth more to you...than to someone else?'

Thanks guys. I learned a few things from this thread indeed. And even about what he should be asking for it.

i have never seen a floval with 990's. do you mean canti's?
as you describe it i think $400-500. in a better economy add $150

Thanks Steve. Yes, I mistook canti's for 990's. That was about what he thought, but I thought that they were more desirable. I guess I should broaden my horizons ;)

Joker, if you can email me at least one good pic and a parts list to brianhaysbmx@yahoo.com, I will try to nail it down for ya $$ wise. In my opinion anyway.
