Cool thread... I started playing guitar when I was 10 years old. I then started playing drums when I was around 12... I'm now 45. So, umm... That means I've been playing guitar for 35 years... Yikes!
Bottom line, I'm a professional drummer and even though it came much easier to me than guitar, I still have to work hard at it all the time. Many, many guys just kill me. Often it's guys who are much younger and who have only been playing for a few years.

That being said, I've managed to make a decent living at it for nearly 30 years, so I'm pretty lucky.
In terms of my guitar playing, I still sound pretty much like I did when I was 10. Shit. That hasn't kept me from learning and writing many songs though. A few basic chords and you're off to the races. Songwriting with a guitar has actually earned me more money than playing drums, although I can barley play guitar. Go figure...
No matter what, the guitar always brings a huge amount of enjoyment to me no matter how lousy I am. It's always nice to play a couple tunes (no matter how simple) and "feel" a song. It's all about melody and chords. Drums never do that for me. Two totally different things but equally enjoyable.
I recently bought a really nice Martin and it makes me sound a little better because it's so damn sweet.

Plus, good high-end guitars are one of the few material possessions that actually appreciate in value. I know several guys who would rather invest in high quality vintage instruments than stocks, bonds or real estate. I once owned a '73 Les Paul custom for over 10 years and sold it for three times what I originally paid for it.
It's never a bad thing to own a decent guitar, it's more of a struggle to be a decent guitar player!

At least for me.
