I've actually started putting in some genuine practice time on it and feel like i'm actually makeing some progress.
Finding time when I was younger was really hard then had a kid and other priorities so that was it for the spare time.
I'm into mostly classic rock, 80's Metal and Thrash.

In 6 months i've ended up with 3 electrics and an elec/acoustic, plus a couple amps and a few pedals (damn pedals are an addiction all by themselves). I've been blowing all my former bike/slushfund on that stuff.
I've even been eyeing some of the more expensive/collectable stuff lately now that i'm starting to have an idea of what I really like, needless to say I can see this hobby getting even more out of hand :CashMoney: than OS bmx stuff.

Anybody else dig playing or collecting this stuff?

I don't play...but I'm dying to learn. I've wanted to for a long time but can never bring myself to moving forward...I don't know why.

The weird thing is that when I do an air guitar move (everybody does...come one admit it!) I've always done it left handed. I'm not left handed. I want to get a lefty guitar...I found one but don't know if it's a good deal or not. The guitar is an Alvarez...acoustic, and they want about $200.

Anyway, I'll be watching this thread for pics of your axes...post'em up!!!

i've played (or at least something resembling playing  ) off and on since the '80s. accumulated quite a bit, but i don't actively collect. i was fortunate to have gotten into it when most of today's desirable stuff was out of fashion, so i haven't had to spend what it would be today - which is indeed way more expensive than BMX for the good (or even mediocre) stuff.

i went thru the pedal phase, and still have a bunch, but mostly go straight into a tube amp, nowadays.

it's sorta my winter hobby.

Cool thread... I started playing guitar when I was 10 years old. I then started playing drums when I was around 12... I'm now 45. So, umm... That means I've been playing guitar for 35 years... Yikes!

Bottom line, I'm a professional drummer and even though it came much easier to me than guitar, I still have to work hard at it all the time. Many, many guys just kill me. Often it's guys who are much younger and who have only been playing for a few years. :Idunno: That being said, I've managed to make a decent living at it for nearly 30 years, so I'm pretty lucky.

In terms of my guitar playing, I still sound pretty much like I did when I was 10. Shit. That hasn't kept me from learning and writing many songs though. A few basic chords and you're off to the races. Songwriting with a guitar has actually earned me more money than playing drums, although I can barley play guitar. Go figure...

No matter what, the guitar always brings a huge amount of enjoyment to me no matter how lousy I am. It's always nice to play a couple tunes (no matter how simple) and "feel" a song. It's all about melody and chords. Drums never do that for me. Two totally different things but equally enjoyable.

I recently bought a really nice Martin and it makes me sound a little better because it's so damn sweet. Plus, good high-end guitars are one of the few material possessions that actually appreciate in value. I know several guys who would rather invest in high quality vintage instruments than stocks, bonds or real estate. I once owned a '73 Les Paul custom for over 10 years and sold it for three times what I originally paid for it.

It's never a bad thing to own a decent guitar, it's more of a struggle to be a decent guitar player! :( At least for me.

My son is getting into it. He is the little guy with the Dean Plugged into the Mesa. His favorite guitarist is Dimebag because he was sick and they share the same B'day. I am trying to get him to use a conventional bodied guitar. maybe someday

Very cool. Just having the support of dad is big let him play what he wants as long as he plays LOL you def recognize a Dean headstock a mile away.

Really cool stories guys, I agree with Tony we need some more pics i'll take some tonight if I have time.

Tony i'm no expert on guitars but Alvarez is pretty well respected for there custom acoustics. If that one is in decent shape is sounds like it may be a decent deal. Definitely worth at least taking a look at it. Just like all the guitar companys they do have a bunch of entry level guitars that are pretty cheaply priced though so be aware.

The only thing my guitars are collecting is dust at the moment. But they're there whenever I feel like making noise. Been playing since around 11.
Here's my collection and my daughter rocking out on hers. She's been playing since she was 8 or 9, 14 now and is perty damn good; play by ear, site reads music, yaaaaa, she's better than I ever was.
L-R: 84 Kramer Focus 4000, 91 PRS CE 24, 89 PRS CE 24, Taylor 9...I forgot, Baby Taylor, 82 Fender Dreadnought

I play a little, but don't collect. I've played off and on since I was about 20. Me and a couple dudes I hung out with back then started our own little band. Never managed to keep a drummer, but actually wrote some songs.

I recently unearthed a cassette tape with an acoustic set of six songs we did. I completely forgot about 3 of the songs on the tape and didn't even realize the tape existed until I found it. I cleaned it up and digitized it. Sounds pretty cool. I'm going to pop it on CD and make a cover and pass it around to the guys that were involved with the band that I can still find these days.

As far as my guitars -- nothing special in collectors terms. Special to me though. My wife bought me two guitars for my birthday 2 different years when we were first together. One is a Yamaha (can't remember the model, but looks like a Telecaster). It was brand-new when she bought it -- Probably about 7 or 8 years old now. The other is a Washburn Electric/Acoustic I bought at a music store specializing in used instruments. All white. Gorgeous piece and sounds great plugged in or not.

I also have a Japanese Fender Squire Strat that simply crunches. I bought it at a pawn shop when my first cheapie guitar broke. All black.

The guitar I play most is an Ibanez acoustic with an all black body. The action is great and is by far the easiest guitar for me to play. I bought it second-hand for $25 in 95 I think. It had playdough caked inside of it. I bang on this one and don't hesitate to let my 3 year-olds take a crack at it either.

I also have a bass for good measure. I don't really know how to play it well though.

At some point in the next few years, I'm going to finish my walk up attic so that I can make it a music/bike room. I'd like to have a full compliment of instruments. The kids just love music and instruments. It'd be cool to have a complete set so that they can just get up there and try out whatever they want.

Very nice guys. Cal10 it looks like you have a whole music room that would be killer.
Ryan that blue PRS is bitchin. I have really been looking hard at those whenever I go into the guitar center.
I think my next purchase is a higher end tube amp.

My guitars are all newer.
My new favorite a brand new Ibanez RG in red and Jackson Dinky DK2. I really love the fixed bridge over the Floyd Rose at least for my abilities right now. I love this thing.

Also a new Ibanez PF series electric/acoustic love the built in tuner. Along with an old strat copy that i've had for years.

Ive played guitar and bass off and on for 30 years, drums, the last 3. I collect my guitars, but I also play them, thats why they were made. I have a couple of sig models, one from Rhoads, 373 of 200 first run, who was my fav player then, and still is now, and a Ernie Ball John Petrucci model, because that guitar plays like a dream. The others are a swamp ash limited Gibson Les Paul, a faded Gibson flying V, and an Ibanez RG270dx, moded with all new pick ups, one being the Dimebucker. Play thru a Mesa Road King half stack, and a rack unit, with a TC Electronics G Major, Furman power supply, Korg tuner A few acoustics from the 70's, Ovation, Martin. My drum kit is a Pearl Export 5 piece. Something for me and the kids can pound on.

Some pics of my collection
I've traded a few of those away for different guitars.. but you can see I'm very into Gibson SG's and Fender Telecasters.

Also a few old live pics of my band.... :)
We're a 3-piece.. so I split my sound across the stage with 2 Marshall cabs....(one on each side of the stage) powered by a Mesa Boogie Triple Rectifier (150 Watts) :)... Sometimes I even use an A/B splitter and run 2 half stacks one Mesa Tripple Rect. and one Music Man HD 130 head with Marshal cab. it's a really nice balance of precise modern gain and gritty 60's rock vibe. Especially with my Tele Deluxe Humbuckers. The signals coming out of the amps are so different it creates some really nice dynamic soundscapes... kind of like 2 guitars playing.

Nice stuff Chromey. Your passion for SG's really reminds me of Frank Marino. Frank has been an SG man for as long as I know. He's also one of the best guitarists I've ever heard. Many people don't know but he's also a very good drummer.

I was lucky enough to briefly play with him in the late 80's and we've been friends ever since. I'm also very close to his younger brother Vince. Vince is a Thunderbird man. Also a frighteningly talented player in his own right.

Thanks !!!!

The Dime made this turd sound alot better. I ripped out all of the factory pick ups, and replaced them all with Semours. A 57 up top, anico II (sp) in the center.

At my sister's house in Glendale, I have my dad's 1952 Gibson J-45. It has the original case with it too. Beautiful instrument. Not a scratch nor nik on it anywhere. I also have his Martin 12 string, from around 1974,an Alvarez we bought him for his 70th birthday in 1983, a Yamaha 12 string, don't know where he got that one from. It was there at the house when I got out of the Air Force in87. There is also 2 rekinto's. These are the smaller guitars you see when mariachis are playing and there is a gitaron, the big bass like instrument in mariachi bands. There is 1 ukelele and 2 banjos also.

My dad couldn't read music but he played by ear. Back in the early late 30's early 40's he was bumming around with Nat King Cole as a rythym or accompanement player whenNat had his trio going.I used to go to numerous classical guitar concerts with my dad. The biggest thrill even to this day, was when I got to meet Andres Segovia in 1979. Dad knew the promoter at the Dorothy Chandler Pavillion in L.A. and got us tickets as well as the opportunity to meet the man himself.
