I didnt pick up a guitar till I was 21 years old. Im 34 now and sound as if Ive been playing a few years at best. Its cool Ill pick it up every now and again but never got super serious about it just kind of learned on my own and never took any lessons. I bought a POS Applause (Ovation knockoff?) back in 1996, its a 12 string acoustic that I use only 6 strings on. The fucking thing sounds better than 90% of the guitars Ive considered buying since then and it stays in tune through war. It dosent even have a real neck its graphite or plastic or some shit but it sounds really fucking good. Also have a P Bass 51 re-issue its got a tele headstock and maple neck, beautiful bass. Owned a few others over the years but sold them off, SG Standard, a Danelectro Baritone, Mexican P Bass, Dinky jr, 1974 Ovation acoustic, all gone now.

What did it have in it before? Duncan designed? or just there private label stuff? I looked at those online but wasn't sure about it for my Jackson. I even thought about a Screamin demon for the bridge at least iv'e heard what it sounds like before.
Way to many choices for my pee brain LOL

I wish I could remember what that Ibanez came with, It might have been private label crap. Screamin Demons are sweet.,..,.Those are George Lynch pickups arent they ?

Yea those are the ones, He is still one of my favorite players of all time. Let's see more pics by the way

I build my own oldschool guitars and wind my own magnets. The first two pics are a guitar I finished recently. and the the white is one i built two years ago. The last three pics are the pickup making in process, from making the skeletons to winding and potting, and the finished magnet coil ready to play.

It's very liberating and exciting. just like bmx builds. the guitar s are built and coated with retro materials like nitrocellulose and formvar, to have the authentic tone of yesteryear. they are aged and reliced and because of the nirocellulose finishes get reliced naturally from frequent playing. The more you play a guitar like this the better all parts sound.

:HAWT: Funny I was just checkin out Warmoth last night I was thinking about building a parts guitar but damn you went all out
I've learned quite a bit reading up on it the last couple weeks and just didn't realize how much work goes into a really nice guitar
Freakin beautiful job on those
Never even occured to me to attempt making a p/u from scratch where did you get the parts for the p/u skeletons?
The last issue of Performance Guitar had some killer stuff on Hot Rod guitar shops/mfg's now and bitd

Curious what the final outlay for materials was not counting time spent if you don't mind saying?

warmoth bodies are nice...but the prices have gone up..

the necks wrre having some problems last i checked...but i do have a neck from the 90's that's killer.

body 170(not that swampash body shown..that was bout 240)
neck 170
stew mac bobbin kits 40
electronics from cts 30
coil wire( well imho stew mac wire is not so great but the alnico poles are consistent and clear sounding- you are only gonna get formvar or better yet "heavy formvar" in bulk for 500-1000 duckets minimum...but stew mac will suffice)
30
pp plate and controls 40
bridge 95
tuners 50
paints(from reranch) 50
nut cutting tools 70

so over 1100 provided you have a bobbin winder.

but if you cheap out or rob parts from dead axes..you can build a killer first build for bout $600

ps...if you try winding pups..prepare to waste alot of material the first ten times or so. it's a very delicate process...and that dewalt drill winder stewmac has a photo of is bs...it's not that simple, and that's an easy way to screw up big time.

btw thanks for appreciating the antique style builds. glad youre inspired...it makes you play better..cause it's funner to play an axe you build...i plan to build a body from scratch ..I have wood that has been drying for 5 years now.

there are guitar kits for 99 bucks online...to build the whole guitar...but...

there are 99 dollar bike kits too. ;)

 yea i've seen those adds and just smiled to myself thinking the same thing. It would be kind of funny just to see what they sent you.
I'm looking for an Explorer(esque) guitar w/floyd. Really like the old Ibanez Destroyers. Got to play one the other day and they are really comfortable not everyones cup of tea though. A Gibson would be ok to, just can't get myself to pay the bucks for Gibson, hell even the Destroyers can get pricey. So that's the body i'm looking for.
I know i'm going to replace the pups so i'm kind of thinking that piecing one together is the way to go.

Out of curiosity what kind of effects/rack/pedals do you run? Interesting to hear what kind of rigs other people run.
It never used to matter to me but now I love to read about some of the big time players rigs in articles.

To change the subject a little i've been window shopping for a newer tube combo amp. Some of the lower power boutique ones seem really cool. Way to many choices

Bump for michagoose.
I may have another one to add soon not completely built yet (hot rodded Telcaster)
Still trying to decide what brand or where i'm going to find a maple/maple tele neck but have the body done already, cuz i'm def not going to build a neck from scratch like Micen's. That would be way in over my head.

just saw this thread......

i never played growing up, but was always around people who did... in school i was learning the sax, but couldnt stand the teacher so i just gave it up..... now i wish i found a different teacher instead.
a few years ago i picked up a second hand bass and started to teach myself but i got injured and have no strength in my index or middle finger of my plucking hand.... that bummed me out, so i gave that up.
my wife is a pianist and has been teaching cooper (6) piano for about 2 years now, he decided he also wanted to learn guitar so we found him a teacher and got him a guitar. he is picking it up good for the few months he's been playing and now he wants me to play and jam with him... so i bought one ax, and that led to me just getting another today...... ugh! LOL

i will get pics of our gear and post it up.... not as crazy as some of you....

im a pro air guitarist, so/so on guitar hero and teh sukness on real guitar, but it is a blast

BP, do yourself a favor -- learn some 2-string power cords, then pick up almost any Nirvana album and learn every song. That's how I started. :) You'll be psyched that you have some kick-ass songs in your repertoire (yes I said "repertoire") and it won't be long until you learn some real cords and start to expand.

Also -- You Tube is your friend. Need someone to show you how to play a song? Just do a search.

Had a 86 American made Fender Strat that my cousin said got ripped off. (Yeah it got ripped off all right!)

5150 Peavey Combo Amp. Always hated Peavey until Eddie got with them and made these amps!

Bumping this old thread because now I have a guitar. :) Actually, two guitars. My ex gave me her old Epiphone LP Special 2 and an amp. I played around with it and had some fun, but the strings felt too close together on the neck so I started looking around for better guitars. I started looking at Gibson Les Pauls cause that's what Buzz played for decades and also SGs, because of Tony Iommi. My two favorite players. Earlier this week on the way home from work I stopped by 6 shops in NYC just to see what was available for what cost and how things felt. I tried out various LPs, mostly studio models and a few SGs. One shop had an SG 61 reissue and it felt amazing. The neck felt wider and it is shallower in depth. Perfect for my fingers, they're not fat, but they feel fat on the frets. The guitar just felt great in my hands. It was older, the neck had been broken and repaired and it was in good shape otherwise. I got home that night and checked craigslist just for shits and giggles. What do I find? I brand new SG 61 reissue listed for about half of what they go for in the store. At that price and being on craigslist I was immediately a bit suspicious. I sent the guy a message and talked to him on the phone, our brief conversation immediately led me to believe that this guy was legit. He was an older guy, about 60 who bought the guitar and never really used it, he had others that he liked better and needed cash. The next morning I got up early and went to his place with cash in hand and got the guitar. He was a really nice guy and even thru in an extra set of strings for me. It's a beauty and it sounds great. Now it's time to learn guitar. Too early to say, but I might like playing it even more than playing my bass.

Into the Void is one of the first songs I want to learn. :rockout:

My friend Jim is in 2 bands and is the Brian P of guitar collectors.
He currently owns 27 guitars and makes fun of me every chance he gets for having a collection of 6 bicycles.

Awesome Scott! I've never played an SG. They always make me think of Angus Young. I'd have to learn an AC/DC song right off the bat if I owned one.

You gotta pick a tune from Nevermind and wail out!

I've made my living making records for the past 16 years. I have owned/still own a bunch of guitars (Martin, Gibson, Gretsch, Taylor, Fender, Guild, Yamaha, Silvertone, Kay, Tokai, etc.) Most are in my studio in Boston.

I am not as much as a gear head as one might think. Ownership comes more from necessity than lust. Would rather look at 70s BMX than guitar porn any day of the week. That said, i recently landed an endorsement with Eastwood (the company that has licensed all of the old Airline guitars.) They are turning out some sick stuff.

I just finished some recording sessions and I ended up using these two guitars a ton. They sounded cool as shit.

mine is a limited edition in red with a chrome, fixed bridge. Played the piss out of it, and it stayed in tune.

I've played guitar since I was 16,but I have almost no talent for it whatsoever. I don't mind though because I find it very enjoyable none the less. I only have 1 guitar I picked up in 91,an ESP Horizon and a Randall rg80 half stack.
