Yeah I am breaking breaking protocal by posting a mid-school build at Trackside. It's just that so many of the Old Schoolers contributed to it that I wanted to recognize them. I will move this to Mid-school in a few days.

Steve does so much for us all that I thought it was time we, as site, should repay him somehow. So around the BOTY 2008 I put out the interest in the build and got a HUGE response. I let everyone chew on it through the holidays and resumed the effort around February. Darren Chan started it off by donating the first frameset, a first gen Challenger. Then it was on, I had a very specific idea about the build. I wanted it to be as high end of a race rig as possible, if I offended some by rejecting parts, don't take it personally.

Notice I said first frameset. I had a bit of an accident with the first frame, totally my fault, wasn't paying attention. So we were only able to use the forks from that set. I apologized to Darren and he was so gracious. Darren is such a cool guy, totally sucked he didn't make it out to the show but I understand why. So I was now in pickle, I remembered there was basically a NOS frame posted on another site. It was pricey, but I screwed it up so I bought it. Kerry was the first to help kick a big chunk of the money followed by Mike (FeelixX26). That was the only near catastrophe. Everything else went smooth as silk.

The parts list is insane:

Frameset- 94/95 S&M Challenger (Darren Chan, Kerry, FeelixX26, Spur), Fork Repair and rechrome (3rdGear, Alvin Mullins)
Cranks- S&M Prince Alberts (I am the owl, Brian P, Keep it Warm, Brian Hays, Choad666, Shinburger)
Sprocket- Profile 45T (Spur)
Wheelset- Araya RB-17 laced to Crupi Hubs. Rims (Shadessean), Hubs (Spur), Spokes/nipples and built by (lboorse2)
Freewheel- Suntour (carbizguy)
Chain- Izumi (carbizguy)
Tires- Tioga Comp III rainbow label fat/skinny (Spur)
Bars- S&M Slam's (Spur)
Stem- VG Inverted (Monocoquemike, Spur)
Brake lever- Early Paul Canti-lever (Spur)
Grips- A'me Tri's (Spur)
Pedals - Crupi rounds (Da-G-Ryd) with JP cages (choad666)
Seat post- Generic (Spur)
Seat guts- VG (Spur)
Seat clamp- PMC (Spur)
Seat- Suede Selle San Marco (Spur)
Brakes- Onza canti's (choad666)
Brake Pads- Mathausers (BMX2112)
Headset and Headlock- GT FSA with PMC Headlock (Spur)
Dropout savers and wheel hardware- VG dropout savers, PMC nuts and washers (Spur)
Plate and numbers- Bomber (Choad666)
Padset- UGP whino (Spur)

Last but not least, special thanks to Da-G-Ryd for assembling, buying the last minute parts like tubes and cables and showing the bike. Also special thanks to Brett (3rd gear) for handling all the fork repair and rechrome. You both Rock!

For what it's worth, I went on a ride with Steve right before the event ended. He on the Challenger and me on his AP (which was an honor). It was priceless he looked like a kid with a new bike and it meant we all did it right. Steve thanks so much for this place and all you do. You have a ton of folks who love ya homie!!!!

I lost my list of all those who helped kick in for the cranks (yes i'm an idiot  ) so if you kicked in, please PM me and we will get you on the list, sorry for that..... Glad you like it Steve. It couldn't happen to a better guy. You are a gracious host here on the site, and a man who has imparted wisdom, when I needed it most, and I thank you for that. I have never met you, but like many others, I consider you a friend, and look forward to meeting you (finally) next year. Thanks again! :homies:

The bike put a smile on my face all the way in Chicago...That is one sweet rig...Big props to S.Brothers, you deserve it...and WELCOME to the mid-school! :) I know you are in the forum a lot, but now you have a bad ass bike to taunt us all with!

I do have to give bigtime props to SPUR too...He was the driving force behind the build and donated a crap ton of the parts...It was a great idea and you took it to the next level!

Big props to da g ryd as well for doing the wrench-work!

Sorry about all the exclamations, but this build got me pumped up!

Seriously jealous S.Brothers...That is a wicked bike...Can you take a bunch of pics and post em here?? I wanna get the full experience!

Spur,

Can you please tell the full story about the first frame? I've been waiting to hear that story for months!

Mike

Ditto what Trevor said -- except for the cranks part -- that was all his f-up.

Lacin' up a set of wheels is probably the very least I can do. Steve, as I've mentioned to you before, it's your unique philosophies and the unique personalities that you've surrounded yourself with that make this site what it is... That is the premier Old school bmx site in the world! Thanks for doin' it.

I love you guys.

The community here is so strong. I've seen it so many times... the amazing ways people step up for each other in good times and bad. It's family and yeah, families have squabbles at times - that's just real life. This place is core. I really feel genuinely privileged to know you all.

What you've all done here is an astonishing gesture and I'm deeply moved by it. I get a little misty eyed. The bike is a-fucking-mazing. It TOTALLY took me by surprise too. I did not see this coming in any way. I was in shock...after Dan interrupted me as I was about to give away the mid-school award, and presented the bike to me - I was emotionally blasted, and from that point I was just going through the motions with the awards ceremony on auto-pilot. Part of me was toasting the other winners on the mic and handing out awards and the other part of me was just mentally crouching at the side of that bike letting it all sink in. The parts, the people behind it - and by the way, of course I've seen gift builds go down on this site in the past. I know what is involved and the time and effort and generosity required to pull something like this together. It was all running through my mind as I went on with the show and giving the other guys their awards.

I appreciate it guys. I could never convey what it means to me. You all know how long-winded I can be, I won't even try to articulate it because words simply won't suffice.

:homies: :41: :homicitas:

I'm blessed to be involved with this site and all of you. So fortunate. I know it too. Believe me, I don't take it for granted.

The bike is really sweet. It even hints at Steve's AP bike with the blue bits and all. Very appropriate bike.
