All,
Looks like the first few bikes that were submitted before the DB was taken down are all viewable, but all have the description of an OM Flyer that someone else submitted. Can this be repaired?

Also, it says I don't have permissions to use the search function within the database.

Other considerations:

1. Can we make each bike submitted editable by the owner/submitter?

2. Database integrity: I think we need to have a few dedicated members involved continually with the database (and yes, I'm totally nominating myself as one of those people) to keep the database accurate. First we need a few people to act as database administrators - those who make sure the database continually works the way it's supposed to -- searches return the correct information, data is uniform, etc), and create custom queries such as "find all frames manfactured in 1980". That sort of thing... Secondly, we need a team of known "experts" that can ensure that the bikes are listed correctly (year of manufacture, model, etc).

I'm really a geek about this stuff... one of the things I really want to see succeed is this database. One of the things that makes BMX Museum (love it or hate it) so popular is the "Museum" part of the site. It's huge, but things are somewhat easy to find (although there's some room for improvement). Where they struggle is accuracy and uniformity. I'm not knocking the Museum one bit, but I think the BMX Society database can better if we start at the ground floor and ensure these things are watched over carefully.

Food for thought...

I know a few members have concerns about the new system and have made it obvious by all the shouts and random post but this is only the first week with this new format. Its not going to be 100% right away.

Members are asking about not being able to do this, do that, are getting error messages, unable to edit, submit or delete.....all on the first day.. :Emoticon_frustrated:

How about we let the mods figure it out and enjoy the fruit of their labor in about a week or so?

I'm pretty sure they know about 95% of the issues already being mentioned.

I agree Hector, 100%. I know these guys are busting their butts to get issues sorted out.

Just wanted to get on record that once we do get things on an even keel we need to keep a close eye on the bike and part database to ensure that it remains useful and accurate as it builds.

If we get to the point where we have thousands of bikes and parts in those databases and then realize there are accuracy/integrity issues with the information, it's going to be a whole heck of a lot more difficult to sort out.

I hear you on that

BTW, you aren't kidding about the other site having a dialed in database.

The new database is totally customizable as far as searching goes. Yes, you can do a search by part type and year.

I have offered to start moving all the data over to the new DB from the old DB. It's really time consuming and it will take me a while to complete it...but I will.

I was worried about 90% of the total new database being under my screen ID, so as I put items in, I am adding the person's ID who originally uploaded that particular item. I hope thats going to be sufficient.

I can only go by what the original poster typed in with the pic as far as specific information. So if you see items in the coming days that have a wrong year attached (or any other error), please simply PM me the item and I will correct it.

I still would Love to see the Parts broken down by Manufacturer.
Scanning through endless pages looking for 1 part is mind numbing.
Why not start Now with a New Layout?

Handlebar- Se -
Profile -
Hutch -
Etc...
Peddals- Suntour -
KKT -
Etc..

There is no reason to scan through the general pages.

The search function works great and you can screen handlebars by the manufacturers like you were mentioning.

To do that, you go to the search page at the link above.

Then, you put the brand you are looking for in the field called "search in brand"

Then you scroll down a bit to "refine by type" which is a drop down menu. You choose handle bar.

When you push search, every bike and every individual part that meets those criteria will come up.

Right now if you search "SE" + "Handlebar" you will get a few false positives on the complete bike records. That is because in the first two days of the db, there was a glitch and some people have not edited in the correct details on their bikes after the info was mistakenly over written.

That problem has been fixed.
