Ok, I have always been a big fan of Araya 7x rims. To me, they are the perfect rim, because it is what I raced with back in the day, on both my 20" and my 24".

On my first 24, it came factory with Araya 7x 24 x 1.75 rims, in a factory "polished" finish. It was a unique polished finish. The rims can be seen in the following two photos, although not very clearly. This particular finish rim was available on a few standard NZ made bikes back in the eighties.

Now, I liked the finish on these rims for a few reasons. One is, that they were shinier than the standard silver rims. Much shinier. And the second was that, not being chrome, they wouldn't flake or chip eventually.

When I was beginning to build my first build a few years back, my 1982 GT 24, I tried to find a NOS pair of these rims. I found one pair, but they wer eup on ebay, and I got outbid. I never saw another pair up for sale. But about two years ago, someone tipped me off that another member had just found a pair, and was keen to sell them, so I ended up buying them, but not having a need for them, I stored them up in my loft.

Anyway, another pair came up for sale recently, and I managed to get them. And it got me thinking about this finish. I remember back in the day, that someone told me, that they were actually plated, and not polished, and that they were cadmium plated. Now, I can't tell for sure, but I did end up buying a pair of used wheels with them rims about four years ago, and the rims did have some kind of issue with the finish, like flaking. I no longer own those wheels, but I do know they were definitely the same finish, as they came on a factory NZ cruiser.

Does anyone know about this finish? I recall have 20 x 1.5 7x's on my Kuwahara 20" back in the day, and they had the same finish.

Here are the rims I now own. Both pairs are destined for two of my cruisers, with one set replacing the silver wheelset on my GT 24.

Compared to the standard silver rims currently on my GT 24:

Anyway, I would be interested in any info anyone can give me on these rims.

And Steve, I'll put some photos in the database for reference too :)

thanks, very interesting actually... I was only aware of the standard non-ano aluminum and the chrome, so this is insightful.

Not being an expert, but, I also have some Araya 7x's in the same finish, and they appear to be "bright anodized". When I worked at an anodizing shop in late 80's-early 90's, we would do this finish on shower door frames. We would polish the aluminum, then bright ano it. It would give it a semi-chrome look without being chrome. Also, it would stay shiny for a long time.

As far as Cadmium plating, it would leave your rims with a gold look to them, not silver. A lot of the bolts on early cars were Cadmium plated, as well as newer cars today.

Nice grab on the 24's!!!

Hope this helps some....

I have a pair of 26" 7Xs that I bought nearly 6 years ago. They appear to be factory polished. I don't know anything about a clear or bright ano. They were NOS at the time, had Araya stickers, etc.

Thats a good point about the cadmium plating. And the bright annodising finish makes sense. It must be pretty hard wearing, as this finish doesn't seem to wear with brake pads like colored anno does.

Dirty, yes I've seen 26" 7x's for sale before with the same finish. I think this finish was available from about late 82. There are some stampings on the inside (tube side) of each rim, and I assume they are date codes, but I haven't tried to decipher them.

The wheels have been built since I got them so I don't remember a marking or date code on the inside of the rim. That's not to say it's not there, I just don't remember.

I also have 2 sets of 26" ones and both came off mid 80's mountain bikes. I'll have to look for date codes also...

i've had that "look" in 2 different versions...

one version is what is mostly mentioned here - the bright ano over semi-polished. the other is basically the same, but just bare (no ano). you could polish those up even more, if desired. i'm pretty sure my bare ones were later and OEM from something, so skipping the ano mighta just been a cost saving measure.

cadmium plating is only done on steel. type I cad is silver and type II is the gold/rainbow color.
i belive it's called "clear anodizing"
