Lived in Barcelona for a month last year and in addition to being a very BMX and skate friendly city, there's a few interesting bikes.

Pity I only had a skateboard and not a bike for some of these spots. Like they were made for riding.

Also spent a month in Sevilla, another bike friendly Spanish city.

The Plaza de la Encarnacion was only opened last year. I think a rider/skater had a hand in designing some of the areas.

And for a closer look at the twin top tube bikes.

Both Barcelona and Sevilla have the hire bikes and they are very popular. Melbourne, Australia spent $5 million setting up a scheme and it gets very little use because of the compulsory helmet laws. The bike community told them it wouldn't work however the government people knew better...
I remember that part down by the beach in your photo. Actually went over for a closer look at the building and also found another great riding spot there.

What a shame for Australia. I instantly thought of how this would/could work in other areas and came up short for LA. Bikes would be jacked for parts, people want/need to drive. San Fran might be a bit too excessive with all the hills and such.

Oops, had to correct my post as the bike community said it wouldn't work. The other downside is in Australia it is not very bike friendly. Many drivers show no respect to bike riders and perhaps that also scares of the visitors who might be encouraged to use the scheme.
Sevilla had problems with a group from one of the Eastern European countries packing them up by the truckload and taking them back home to their country. The bikes are pretty heavy.
It would work well in LA with the beach areas (except for theft problems) and the good thing is you don't have to worry about storing your own bike. I'm sure other European countries do it as well and not sure how they handle the theft of parts problem.

Hire bikes are all over europe in every bigger city.
I suppose Barca and Sevilla aren´t even the most bike friendly towns over here. Ever been to Holland or Danish capitol city Copenhagen? It´s awesome there. Stinky and time killing cars definitely play second fiddle there.
Me personally know of hire bikes (kind of the same system like in Spain) in Berlin and Hamburg. Local officials there (more or less) solved the theft problem with GPS receivers.
