I also think the buyer didn't like the fact that it went that cheap. Hopefully I'm wrong.

That sounds shaky considering how meticulous the seller was with all the precise measurments and other information in the item descripition.
He sounded very intelligent and analytical right up to where he claims to have lost it.
If I may make a suggestion? Instead of challenging his character by calling him a liar, try appealling to his nobler motives with a comment like, "I really appreciate all the usefull information you had in your description of the hub. It was that which led me to the conclusion of that to be the exact hub for my project. I really hope you locate it."
I know you are saying WTF, why would I want to blow smoke up his ass if he is a douchbag? Well if you challenge his character by calling him a liar he has to defend himself and stick to his story. Whereas if you give him an honorable way out, he might take it.
Which do you want, the satisfaction of calling him out or your hub?
I read this to my wife and she said she would choose satisfaction.
These are just my thoughts. I hope they are not offensive.

It's obvious what happened. You were basically gonna steal it from him and he took his toy and went home. Give him negative feedback and tell him you won't remove it until he "finds" your hub. Ebay amateur most likely.

Red Baron,
I would usually do what you said but I asked him strait if he has actually misplaced it or is it that I bought it too cheaply.
Then told him it's fine that he misplaced it but I would have to write that on his feedback and I hope he doesn't mind that.
we'll see what happens. he could either attack me or be noble, thats his choice I guess.
I'll let you know how it goes.

I've become more and more cynical in my dealings on ebay. I can see where the guy may have misplaced it, but in my experience he's probably full of it.
I bought a tuf neck some years ago on ebay for around $30. The seller told me it had been run over by a car prior to shipping, so he was going to give me a refund. I told him, cool, just send me a pic, I may still be able to use it. Surprise, surprise, he never responded and because of the refund I couldn't leave any feedback.
I like Red Barons idea. Give him a little bit of guilt and an out and he may try a little harder to find it.
I hope it works out for you. Keep us posted.

he came through, I apollogised for being strait forward in asking him if he really lost it but just had to know.
he has sent me the invoice and it's paid up, he said he had some things done around the house and had put it in a box that he'd forgotten.
all has worked well.
he'll probably give me shit in my feedback now..ha ha

Glad the seller came through. You could always put the hub in a glass box for a desktop decoration.

If his description is accurate and it is a 48h 100mm hub with one side threaded, my 1st thought was that it was a hub designed to be used on the front of a tandem in conjunction with that funky Phil Wood brake. Early Phil Wood 48h hubs were usually hubs for tandems, not BMX.

But the rear hub I have that came with the drum brake has 36 holes (?)

They made them all kinds of ways. Different spacing, spoke holes, spoke patterns, etc. I tend to agree with it possibly being intended for a front drum application. The 100mm spacing is unusual. Anyway doesn't mean you can't use it for something else now! Nice pick up and glad you ended up getting it.
