I tried to talk him into a clean up, maybe some citric acid on the chrome stuff.

Did not have any luck there. It was stripped with a wire brush and abrasive sponges.

The fork got the same treatment, and now it is all hazed.

When I left, bondo was going in the dents.

:(

Where is this happening? Local to you in person? Or is this an 'online' assassination?

It is local to me.

He is not online at all, not an online assasination.

I am just bummed about it.

Race Inc. 24, GHP cruiser bars, Torker mini stem (which got a hammer ding during during disassembly), THUN cranks with the drive pin snapped off, KKT KMXs, weird post maybe from an exercise bike? The frame was not cracked anywhere, even though the clamp was cinched down to fit that post.

It was his from BITD.

I could not watch that. Did u offer him any cash? The bars would probably fetch enough to cover the entire purchase.

I offered cash and even a new Redline 24, to clean it up do the citric treatment on the forks, etc.

Tried hard with every angle of approach regarding, preservation vs. restoration.

And failed. It was just what he wanted to do.

In the end, its kind of like "Catch and release" among fishermen. You can extoll its virtues, but some guys are just going to eat the fish anyway.

He was a little nervous to show me the thing in bare metal knowing my view on it.

It was a weird conversation, went on about how much work it was...

And I was thinking, "Bet it was hard work, fucking that up...." did not say it though.

After seeing it I said, "It's only original finish once."

Then he hit on that and related a story of an old car that had original faded paint and how cool it was.

Oh well.

He will go through the process, and get the restoration done. But it will be anticlimactic for reasons he doesn't quite understand. And it will bug him. Then late one night when he is alone with his thoughts your words will echo through his head, "It's only original finish once." The understanding of what he did will come flooding into his brain and he will have an uncontrollable urge to kick himself in the ass!

I think he will wake at 3:50 am in a terminally ill motorlodge somewhere in rural Pennsylvania. The tv will be on. There will be a black and white rerun of Ironsides on. He will rise from a mildewy bed in his tan 50% polyester boxers. He'll take a sip from a can of off-brand diet cola. He will stand before an oblong, balding mirror and begin to sob into his hands. The next day he will lose a filling to a Charleston Chew.

another fine example of why more folks getting "in" to this is bad for the history of bmx and the preservation of og examples. sad but true!

you can't save them all bro but good on you for trying.

have a good night, rob

Nightmare in real life. I bet you wanted to choke him. Some people will never understand.
