Sadly, one of the first things I noticed today is that Beastie Boy's Adam "MCA" Yauch lost his battle with cancer today.

I loved the Beastie Boys ever since I first heard "Fight for your Right." and have purchase everyone of their albums since--something I never do. In the mid '80s I would cruise my '86 Toyota truck with a pair of Pyle Driver 12s in the shell, blasting tracks from License to Ill.

RIP MCA, you were taken far too soon!

It's a sad day for the world. I bet there is not one person who knew of Adam Yauch that is not bummed today. Artist, philosopher, philanthropist and icon. He will be missed dearly.

P.S.- Don't forget music producer, fashion plate, absolute trend setter, taste maker and perhaps a future politician or author. We all lost a lot today. A whole lot.

When I lived in Nepal, I met Adam and hung out a fair bit over the course of his few days there. He was staying with one of my friends. It was a time period in the late 90's when I was supplying a bunch of Tibetan Buddhist items and Tibetan cultural odds and ends to the Milarepa Foundation, which was the organization that put on the Tibetan Freedom Concert series. It was all run by my friends, and Adam and the Beastie Boys were the main benefactor of the event. If any of you ever went to one of those shows... I sent all those prayer flags you saw flying there.

Incredibly unassuming and down to earth guy. In fact, a bunch of my expat friends had a band, and Adam was jamming with them. One guy who didn't recognize him, said of the jam session, "this sounds like the Beastie Boys", he turned to Adam and asked, "do you like them?". He just shrugged and said, "yeah, I'm pretty into them".

Later someone told the guy who asked that question who Adam was. He was so embarrassed... but it was all innocent on his part, if totally funny and Adam was not a diva type... he liked not being recognized, I think. It allowed him to be just another dude, and he was real comfortable with that.

The Beastie Boys. Rulers.

Let me say this...I've always been a hip hop head. The Beasties Boys to me were basically every rock and rollers Beatles. Every race, color or nationality liked the Beastie Boys. One of the most (if not the most) original groups ive ever listened to with a style unmatched. One more thing....a primarily Jewish, white hip hop act in New York City to gain as much respect in 1979 as they did, speaks volumes about their shit.

Not telling you guys anything you dont know...just saying

Sad day

That's really cool Steve.

I'm really down tonight. The Beastie Boys have been such a huge part of my life. Along with Run DMC, they were a very welcome breath of fresh air to my adolescent ears and eyes. To me they stand above almost all other bands of their generation. Their sound was always evolving. I think that's what I admired most about them. My favorite artists are ones who constantly evolve, Gerhard Richter, the Melvins, etc, etc. The Beasties were the first artists that I noticed doing this, never staying in one place and doing the same thing over and over again. They weren't cranking out an album every year, so when something new finally came out after several years drought it was a big event and it was always a treat, never ever a disappointment. There was never a reason to be nostalgic for the good old days or feel that they had "lost it". Their last album was as good as their first.

Something else worth mentioning is their sense of humor. Way too many people take themselves way too seriously, especially in rap music. These guys had a wicked sense of humor. They could be serious too, but I think you'd have a hard time finding any band having more fun than the Beastie Boys.

Losing MCA is a hard one. I knew he was sick, but had hoped or assumed he would be okay. It's not unlike when Layne Staley died in 2002, another artist I have a great amount of respect and admiration for. I guess I knew Layne's story wouldn't have a happy ending, but you always hope that someone will pull thru. I suppose it's naive, but you always hope. When death finally comes it's no less shocking. This is different though. I suppose every death is different, but when Layne went it was also a bit of a relief at the same time. This is closer to like when Jam Master Jay was murdered. A shock. Unexpected. Someone from your youth, you grew up watching, who made you so happy, so many more times than you can count.

I saw the Beastie Boys twice. First time was in 1998 in Kansas City. Tribe Called Quest opened, it was their farewell tour. That was right as I was finishing up college. In college friends would call me the 4 Beastie Boy at times because I was so fucking obsessed with them. The show was good. Not great. I blame that review on myself looking back, my expectations were way too high. I had waited 12 years to see what was at the time the greatest thing in my mind to perform. I think I was expecting the second coming or something. They put on a good show, but I was not blown away. I had a chance to see them again in 2007, they were playing Brooklyn for the first time. They played McCarren Pool in Williamsburg. This time they blew me the fuck away. One of the best shows I've ever seen in my life. I think they were amped to play their hometown and also their first show in Brooklyn, ever. It showed, they were electric. They were ON. Part of the way thru the show, MCA pulled DMC on stage, as if shit wasn't insane enough already, I nearly lost it at that moment. My 12 year old self was there and living the dream.

It's a strange feeling to really mourn the loss of someone you never knew or even met. Yet he is such a huge part of your life. Earlier tonight I was having a conversation with my wife, I can't even remember what it was about. She looked at me and said "you've acting funny, what's wrong?" and I just welled up and said "MCA died". It's all I could think about. We had talked about it earlier, but I guess it was finally sinking in and there's something to be said for saying it outloud. She gave me a big hug and I used every ounce of my willpower to hold the tears in. I was mostly successful. This guy gave me so much. More than I could ever write or say.

Thank you Adam Yauch. Rest in piece.

I was at that show! I liked it. Remember the giant toilet paper rolls being thrown all over the place? That was my wife's first big concert in the USA. When we went to the Tibetan Freedom Concert the next year at Alpine Valley, she was like an OG veterano, kicking it back stage with the girls from Cibo Mato & Sean Lenon...and having a great day. That was a good time in life in general.

Anyway, great eulogy really, Scott. I feel the same about it. Like I said in the shout box... it effected me a bit more than I would have thought. It's not because I had met him... it's because of the music and the years of being moved by their art. Our generation goes way back with them.

Oh, I liked it too! I liked it a lot. Don't get me wrong. I guess I was just expecting soooo much, I was waiting to be beamed up to another realm, Intergalactic Panetary style, which was completely unrealistic. I had finally met my idols, and you know what they say about that. I thought no less of them after that, they put on a very good show. But the Brooklyn show, that more than exceeded any expectations I had for them. That was 9 years after the Kansas City show, and another 50 concerts under my belt. I can't remember the TP, seems like something I should remember. I can still see the stage, and I remember buying a Beastie Boys basketball jersey at the merch booth. I remember Q Tip at one point during the Tribe set saying something along the lines of "what you really came to see will be on soon, we're almost done, Beastie Boys are next" like they were just filler material, I think I actually yelled back at him that Tribe was kicking ass, kinda felt bad that he felt that way. Cool to know that you and I have been in the same room Steve! Hopefully that happens again! Oh, and I saw Cibo Matto last year, those girls know how to rock.

After the Beastie Boys on my iTunes comes this, how nice:
