Yes they did come in a hard ano finish. I have a couple sets. Both came on mountain bikes.

I've personally never seen hard ano - black yes, hard ano, no - I've polished allot of survivors that had the powdery oxidation coat over them, that polished off with no more effort then hand polishing
Not saying i dont agree with Dan though - those are the later 2/2 bodies - that weren't released till late 80's, so I'm not as familiar with the later offerings - though I follow market closely and have never even seen a hard ano set in my yrs of research.

I hate when the 2nd gen of any product ends up inferior to the original product.

Try to clean them with gojo ---- I know sounds weird, but try it. The one with grit and give it a once or twice over in a tight spot

Did you remove the cages ever - they may be free of oxidation under the contact points and still be polished looking - may wanna try it to see.

The knowledge in this place is just streets ahead of any other site...

BTW: Word of warning removing the cages, as the screws can be hit and miss..try a little heat on the heads of the screws and don't force them..I did :teary: (but hey can be retapped)

Update - dug alittle deeper on the 2/2 since I never had necessity before (my collecting cut off is 84)

Dan is correct - there were hard ano 2/2 bodies available - just seen a pic that shows better/clearer...
So don't bother fussing to check yours, they look proper.

Just to keep things on track and back to the program : )

Now that my curiousity has been rekindled and I'm not as well versed on the 2/2 options - does anyone own the black body 2/2s ? If so can you share if they are painted bodies or ano ? They always looked thick glossy powder to me, as I've never actually handled a set of those either.
I have only ever had interest in the early ones which were always the basic polished with black cages - I've owned a couple sets of 2/2s but they too were the basic format and sold since they didn't fit my era builds.

Mtb mags I referenced shows them in use till around 90/91 but the ones I have don't really showcase them or reference them anywhere (couldn't find much in later Bmx/fs issues either) - and what little pics they do have its hard to tell

I had this picture on my work computer. I don't have any of this stuff anymore besides the pedals.

Yeah funny - I went stupid last night after showering - skimming thru all my mags and whats available online from that 85ish-90 era, and couldn't find ad or mention that showed them - a couple on riders that may have been, but not clear enuff to tell - then I email two other cats that did the mtb thing hard back then and one also has a set but he is out of town on work ....

After all that spent time - some cat over on museum posted a set for sale with better/clearer pics that can't be questioned .... It kills me how some cats still have site pride issues - from his listing he must've read this thread - don't understand why he couldn't just chime in and share his info here ?
The sites are different - just like people - you know how to be with certain types and when you can be comfortable or correct with each individually ... The sites are no different, I find they all share an equal significance to the hobby in a whole. To be honest I like the fact there's different atomoshepres to each, keeps the variety up. JMO

I benefit from each albeit in different ways. We're all in it for the same reasons for the most part - sharing memories of the past, anything to help those foggy memories seem clearer to me is what it's all about.
