I didn't think people scored stuff here in Germany, but one of my young new schooler friends found this bike in the garbage the other day.

We're kinda new friends, and haven't know each other for so long. I have helped him out a lot, moved him from one apartment to another, etc. So I wanted to see how he would handle the whole thing, kinda to test the waters. So I showed him that I also rode a bike like this when I was a kid and wondered if he would just give me the bike cause it was quite a move we made and stuff and I paid for the whole thing...

So he said I could have it for ten bucks. But then after I got it I went on a massive guilt trip. This guy does not have a lot of cash and could really use the money. I felt like a total heel.

So I like the bike and everything, but it is not worth a lot of cash to me because 1. it is a survivor and I would not change a thing on it and then I would just have another bike I really wasn't all that much into that would take up much needed space. 2. I really don't have any cash either. I do have a good job, but I have spent too much money on this hobby and need to save for a rainy day. I don't really even have a spare two hundred bucks really.

So I don't know what to do. I think that there is no way that I can't give him more cash for it, but I would never pay him for what the bike is worth, because I just don't have the cash. I also have no time to properly sell it and to ship it to the US would be too time consuming.

What should I do? What do you guys think this bike is worth? It has a nice set of gold maxy cranks. The paint is good, but the decals are all faded. The mags are yellow and faded. The bars are anoed blue but are all scratched up. The neck is a suntour, it is ok. the Pedals I think are MKS and are in decent shape. The red seat is not an elina and nothing really.

I do like the bike, but was never a fan of these mags (Lester?) and blue / yellow is not my thing. That aside, I do like the bike alright and it would be fun to clean it up and get it rolling.

thats one sweet bike. No time to ship to the US? You need money because you don't really have any to spare. Well that right there will be your spare money. Also there's enuff collectors down there you may be able to leave it in the country!!!

Sell it localy and split the money with the kid. It will be more than he expected and you both win. Survivor maybe, but I don't think those wheels go with that bike... wouldn't they be much earlier?

So sad that someone would throw that away.

Well - honestly he woulda sold it had it not been you

If it really gets you bent then hit him off with a bit more if you can or if you truly are keeping it, with no intention of a flip then atleast it's still there - should you sell it in the future you could always give him half as a business deal.

All you really need to do to that thing is change the tape on the seat.

I second the selling it and giving him half the profit idea. You make some cash for yourself, he gets more than he would have gotten otherwise (He obviously has no idea of it's value) and the bike was saved from the trash. Goodness all around.

Repatriate it, go to the US Embassy and tell them this bike is seeking refuge and to please send it back to the homeland in the diplomatic postage pouch.

Parted out on Ebay more I think it would land more than 100.

A pickup at a garage sale could be half that.

Find in a scrap metal yard, ten bucks.

I think those wheels are cool, ACS Mags?

Yes, it does look like those are ACS Mags! They are quite faded. Does anyone know how to re-dye them? Posted Image Posted Image

Here are more pictures of the bike. It is pretty rough.

Questions:
1. How much do you think it is worth
2. Should it be restored with new decals or left as a survivor with only a clean up. The paint seems still to be pretty good.

I finally got around to turning over the bike and see that the serial number is a 350821 serial number and that the little CrMo sticker says "USA" on it instead of Japan.

Now depending who you talk to, this is either a USA made MX-II or an MX-II welded up in Japan with USA Cr-Mo. But the sticker does not say Japan as they did later.

Plus, those ACS mags are kinda rare. They have a Bendix 76 Coaster Brake.

Yellow and Blue is kinda totally ugly. But thinking about it, I will probably never ever get this good of a find ever again in my entire life, regardless of where I am.

So gosh darn it all, I decided to keep it. You see, I am unfortunately a person that is much more driven by emotion than logic. This bike is totally not me, but I am gonna try to fix it up as best I can. Hopefully you guys can help.

I decided that I am going to give the kid 200 Euros. On a good day that is around 300 bucks, on a bad day like today it is only 250 USD. I think that is a decent price. I am sure I could get more for it, But since I am not going to sell it, that is a decent price I guess.
