what are we riding, today?

Recommended Posts

i know there are a lot of us that still ride to varying degrees - whether it's at a pretty high/current level or just trying to pull old tricks from BITD.

for those still at it, what are we riding? old school bikes, mid, retro, new school...?

for me, working in shops since 1984, i've always upgraded to the latest tech as it came out. BITD, and until very recently, i don't think i ever rode the same bike for more than 2 years before moving on (which in hindsight is how i ended up with much of my vintage collection...it began as accumulation :) ). today, i don't have a single OS bike that i ride. i have a few midschools and some retro things i'll take out for just a cruise, but my main bikes for getting it done (or at least trying  ) are fairly to completely current tech...

my flat bike (when i feel like doing peg stuff). this is kinda a mix of mid-to-retro-to-current. the only true OS thing is the front wheel, which has been on whatever my main flat bike has been since about 1986 and the seat. this is probably the longest duration i have ever had a bike "in service". 2003 Kappa Starsky.

this is my "most of the time" bike. other than the seat, i think just about everything else is currently available or not far off. 2007 Sunday 20"TT.

what are you other guys on, these days?

here are my rides.

2008 Knight Proformer today was going to be my 1st day to be able to take it to the skatepark since my hand is half way healed. But hit a few jumps and the bars moved so not today.

I love that Kappa.. How close is the geometry to a Trickstar?

as much as i can tell by laying one on top of the other, it seems very close. Kappa/Scott said they were supposed to be the same. it's been so long since i rode a TS i don't really remember how they rode. i have no complaints with the Kappa and it only took a few minutes to get used to it when i first got it.

Well I do ride them all at some point but the main riders are my Quad and my merida 24". Nothing special but the retro MXII style RL440.

i tried out a 90's GT with all new parts for flatlanding, 1 1/8 headset "mod" being the main upgrade:

gtbike.jpg

only older parts were the frame, rear rim and front wheel, well the clamp too but that was NOS.

i decided lately to use a suelo simple frame instead with those parts, but the 91 gt will go back to use once the simple breaks, bends or whatever.

then there's the street, trails bike that i use for going to work:

i ride the collected bikes to the lake during only the summertime.

For 2009 (and hopefully much longer) I'll be sporting this Master.

My flat bike is an 08 Hoffman strowler with Odyssey parts. My ramp bike is an SE DeVille with Odyssey parts. Total new school bikes. I like cruising around on my old bikes but the geometry is too wacky now for serious riding.

I spend most of my time on a two-four:

gallery_4408_202_44256.jpg

gallery_4408_202_38518.jpg

It's a Banshee Scratch, touted as the missing-link between BMX and mountain bikes. It can set it up 24", 24/26", or 26", up to 3" tires, geared or single speed, rigid or up to 5 inches of suspension. It's my goto bike for just about everything. I get full leg extension with the seat up, or drop it all the way down for park riding.

I still fool around on my RL20-II, but after riding a bigger bike, I feel too tall to be comfortable pulling any kind of moves on a 20". I'm passing all my OS stuff down to my kids, but at least I still have a capable bike to go play with them..!

There's some great bikes being shown here.

Tried riding an old school Haro for a while, however, moved to the new school stuff because they feel better and not as afraid to damage it if I come off. And I have been known to come off a few times...
