What year is my NOS Redline RL20 II kit?

Recommended Posts

Brian - do you know if they changed the forks mid year or did all of the 87's come with the lowest fork pegs (using the OG skinny pegs that were used on 85/86)?

Correct Marcus all 87's had low fork peg mounts and 85-87 screw in pegs. It wasn't until 88 that they made the pegs slightly larger with a different size thread and the different knurling patterns

Thanks Brian. I learned something here today. My white RL is an 87 frame and fork when I thought it was a mismatch f/f (86 frame w/87 fork). This white one has the weep holes in the brake bridge. The chrome one I got from Paul which was previously yours is an 86 frame with an 88 fork (larger diameter pegs with the different knurling pattern. So one complete and one mismatch for me. :OSThumbsUpPeace[1]:

You'll see them both at the slam tomorrow.

Marcus

who put you down ?

we'll see who knows what when the guy who owns the bike responds about the weep holes...also betting that it has a completely numerical serial # on the bottom bracket as opposed an 87 serial which has a R prefix.

you want to argue and act like the guy with the most toys knows best but I don't care how many RL20II's you have. This means nothing about what you know. Where are all of your technical comparisons and information supporting your theory ? You just want to act like you know some shit but you don't. And what I have is none of your concern

Sorry for the delay in responding to this. I was getting notifications when there was a response and then for whatever reason they stopped coming. You were right on the money! It doesn't have weep holes and has a completely numerical serial number with no letters. Thanks for the info!

This is the first time that I've seen this thread. I figured that I would add my 2 cents. First off, Brian is right in that I have owned my black RL-20II since I bought it new from a local shop in Rochester NY. This was in October 87, however I do remember that frameset hanging on wall for what seemed like forever. They were very eager to finally sell it. They honored my request to swap out the fork with an RL-20 that had the lower pegs, which was also hanging on the wall. Mine has no serial number whatsoever. I had always assumed that the frame was an 86 because it originally came with the high peg fork... but I can't say for sure that it's an 86. I suppose it could be a very early 87. I had also assumed that the 86's had painted bottom brackets and the 87s were stripped to chrome to match the decal pattern. I do find it odd that all (or at least most) of the black RL-20II's that I've seen have the high pegs. This would suggest that they were an 86 model. No proof though. Honestly I don't think Redline had a real set date for when they switched over to new model years. Anlun seemed to be just pumping out framesets with no regard to model year... until 88 anyway. I've seen lots of 87 serial number Haros that were built as 88 model bikes.

I just came across this thread. I also have the same NOS black RL20II frame set with the high fork peg mounts. It currently doesn't have the decals applied but I have a set of NOS decals for it. Mine doesn't have the weep holes in the brake bridge and the cable guide on the top tube up by the head tube is solid like an 86. Also the serial number only consists of numbers and no letter 'R'. I feel mine is an 86 or at least is an 86 frame with the 87 black color. I've seen 86 Haro Sports/Masters that were essentially 85 frames with the higher fork peg position and the higher bars that were sold as 86 models with the half paint/half chrome scheme.

This is the only picture I currently have but can take some pictures of the brake bridge and the cable guide.

Nice ! Mine was exactly the same as yours when I bought...black no stickers solid cable guides no weep holes and numerical serial

I still say 86 100%

I stripped my Bottom bracket but they were the same when shipped from redline

I think I'll strip the bottom bracket when I put the stickers on. I'm building it with a 4 bolt silver Forklifter stem and chrome bars. Basically as an 86 with chrome Super Pros.

This thread is certainly becoming educational.

I have a RL20 II Frame that I purchased in the Summer of `87 serial # 513234. it has both the top tube cable bosses Head tube and mid bridge) and no weep holes in the Brake Bridge. I had always assumed it was an `86 Frame because like RL Paulie's it sat on the wall at the Bike shop for months. This thread has pretty much confirmed it to be an 1986

If the fork is original then it's an 87. It appears that some of the early 87 bikes came with the high fork pegs, but I find it highly unlikely that an 86 came with the low fork pegs like yours has...

Beautiful bike btw. Welcome to the site!

Actually the Forks are from my old Red `87 RL20 that I had purchased some months earlier. The Chrome RL20 II Frame had been on the wall at Albe's for some time before this.

RL Craig

Are you a ramp rider from Michigan? Did you do demos in the Toronto Canada area in the late 80's?

Yes I'm from Michigan (just N. of Detroit to be exact) No never been to Toronto for Demo's. As far as ramps I used to ride ramps 20 yrs ago., Right now I'm banging around at a local Community Skatepark that caters to Bikes and boards. Still trying to get the nerve up to let it hang out like I used to. And yes I'm riding the RL20 II.

Seriously Joe? You recall seeing it in 86? It was that place in Irondequoit. Bicycle Center or something? I think I still have the receipt for it somewhere. $225 for the frame/fork.

Paul, I saw Team Haro there in summer of 87...your frame was hanging up then, and had been there for a while "I used to spend a lot of time there"...I got my complete RL20 in late 86 from another shop, but I remember wanting your 20 II frame when I bought my shop built RL20, but couldnt convince my mom to drop all the coin on just a frame, and then spending 100s more on parts to build it...I'm def gonna say that your frame had to have been manufactured before 87...
