I would just print a card, "Bike Collector" I collect old bikes, Cash paid!

With your real name and a phone number.

You could say, "If you ever want to sell that bike, give me a call."

And then leave, let the person consider it.

At least that way, there would not be bulletien out for a person matching your description. If the story was told to a parent, school teacher, police whatever it would be easy for them to contact you and find out if you are legit or some kind of nut.

A second comment, the parents nowdays are easily freaked out after spending so much time watching America's Most Wanted and other shows like that. In my little town parents drive the kids to school, for security fears. I can remember fixing kids bikes, that I did not even know. Nowdays you must be a creep, if you try to adjust the angle on some kid's bars or help him get his chain back on.

I still try to help the kids out with the bikes if they are dangerously out of adjustment, even if I tell them to go home and ask Dad to move the bars to "here".

...it would be easy for them to contact you and find out if you are legit or what kind of nut you are.

Fixed your typo! :)

Yah that would make it real easy for you to be on a "watch list"

hahaha who knew that following kids around neighborhoods in a closed van with sunglasses asking them about their kids bikes would be so wierd bahahahaha

Ha ha. Well, I'm glad you guys are getting a kick out of this like I am. A few days removed now I feel like I probably should have just kept driving. But hey, I know my intentions were good. I meant no harm to anyone...that's why I find it funny.

I think with the bike collections going on, if one parent or officer stopped by they would know the fixation is old bmx bikes.

Although, they may find bike porn on my computer.

:)

(Meaning a really nice vintage bicycle pic.)

I drove past a group of mothers on the beach with some kids and one of them was wheeling a bike that at first glance was a mongoose with tuffs. I swung around with my brother in the car and asked this young mum if I could check out her bike . the four of them were all giggly and said of course you can. I realised it was a copy peice of crap so I thanked them and went to get back in the car when the one holding the bike said "oh you were serious"....... she thought I was trying to make a pass at her. I'm sure her friends will be ribbing her for a very long time.

This happened about two years ago.

I missed this, very funny, I can add:

Back in about 1998 or 9 I am driving home and see a black GJS parked in front of the Police Activity League (a safe place for kids after school).

I walk in like I own the place and ask a receptionist," who owns the bike in front", she sends out a 12 year old, he sees me and thinks he is in trouble, of which I reassure him he is not.

I cut to the chase and said "I want to buy your bike", he responds with, "its an old piece of shit". I pulled out $50.00 deal is made. Keep in mind there are officers with weapons inside. I ask if he needs a ride home he says no and I am on my way.

A few months back my wife and I were driving down a main street a couple of towns overs and I spotted a couple of bike flipped upside down outside a 7-11. I immediately spotted white tuffs and a red frame, so I made a quick U-turn and went into the parking lot. I approached 3 boys that were about 12 and I asked "Who owns the red bike?" The one kid says "I do, why?"

I told him that I collect old BMX bikes and asked him if I could check it out and he said yes. Turns out it was an original red 83 Quad with tange forks, dk stem and Haro bars. He said his dad was doing a cleanout at some house and they were throwing it out so he took it home for his son. He told me he gets crap from his friends for riding such an old bike and wanted to get a new one. I gave him my number and told him to have his dad call me if he wants to sell it. That was about 6 months ago. I never heard from him. I do often ride down that street to see if I can run into him again but no such luck. My wife was snapping picks of this creepy old man in the yellow shirt checking out the kids bike. LOL. She's great!!

Apple Hill and Placerville 2010 092.jpg

I spotted a kid on a squareback as I was getting on to the freeway. Pulled over, freaked out my wife and kids.

She said, "You aren't going to buy that are you?!"

"Naw, just give me your good camera."

Asked the kid if I could take a pick of it, he knew it was cool. Said it was his Dad's or uncle's old bike.

I though it was neat how he slammed the seat and fitted it to his own purpose.

Not sure how to upload pics anymore. I will try.
