1977 Suzuki

Recommended Posts

I picked this up earlier this summer. I had been looking for a Suzuki for a long time. I had one for a very short time as my last BMX bike years before finding the vintage hobby. It had a recent full restoration. I normally like to restore them myself but as they don't show themselves very often I was ready to pick one up in any condition. Oddly enough I got a second one, a full-survivor only a few days later. It was traded off before I even took possession.

This one is pretty close to correct. I'll slowly make a few upgrades/changes to get it 100%. Although very clean in some areas it needs a little attention in others.

Late model Victor pedals will have to go.

This will have to be cleaned up before I can call it done.

'nother nice one m.r.,

i remember seeing these bikes in the suzuki motorcycle shop growing up. but for whatever reason, don't remember ever seeing anybody riding one. they're rugged looking though....cool forks too.

is that original paint too?

The fork looks weird. I have a Suzuki frameset and the tabs are much thinner and the crown looks totally different.

Yep...you are right. Look at it next to one of my TX-500 forks:

It looks like I need to add one more part to my list... :(

Thanks for the props everyone. I think this one will wait until I get a few things and I'll bust it down, finish cleaning it and build it a little differently. I might ride it for a while until then.

Very nice. Brings back memories. I got one of these for Christmas back in I think 77. My mother paid $150.00 for it back then and that was allot of money for single mother back in those days.

This was the first and only BMX bike I ever owned. I was probably 9 or 10 when I got it and rode it all the way to 17 years old. Mine was bought in Bremerton Washington. I then moved to Rigby Idaho where I had abandoned the bike with some neighbor kids before moving to California at age 19. If only I would have hung on to it. Makes sad to think about now. I would love to own one of these again but they seem impossible to find.

Now I am a 40+ roadie and ride a Cervelo S2

RMH i can't send you a nessage but i could help you out

neff - if you can't do something with RMH for whatever reason, hit me up. I've been on the hunt for one of these for years. It and a first gen OM are the only bikes left on my "must find" list.

Great bike MR! :Praise: What should we look for when ID'ing '76 vs. '77? I wish I could find that full article/review Ben posted from Minicycle/BMX Action (or maybe it was BMX Action)... I remember first being stoked about these when that issue came out.

Here's some other stuff that's probably been posted before... Interesting to note, Suzuki starting dipping their toes into the BMX market as early as '74.

Some people say it was their 2 (or so) years of hard-core R&D with SoCal riders and designers that led to such a superior complete bike when compared to their Japanese competitors. In that sense, one could argue it was really an American designed bike, made by Suzuki.

Pete I pretty much assume that every Suzuki is a '77. I think it was pretty late in '76 before they were in. Kind of like Mongoose in '75. I didn't look this up so I could be wrong.

That Suzuki plastic stuff is funny. I actually had a little triangular Suzuki plate that fit into the spot between the seat post and the brake bridge on most Stingray type bikes. I moved that plate from bike to bike as we broke them. Since we painted our bikes so often everyone always thought it was the same frame This was about '74.

Ok! here is a little light reading for you Zooka fans out there.

Suzuki GVX-1 works BMX test. November 1976 issue of Mincycle/BMX action magazine. Taking into consideration that most national publications have a three month lead time for completed articles submitted to the magazines editor. So it's a fair guess that the test itself was conducted in the late summer of 1976. Enjoy.
