Loop quad project I've been trying to refine

Recommended Posts

I saved this chromoly loop tail quad from being chrome plated and destroyed five or so years ago. The previous owner contacted me to have it plated and I managed to air a trade for it. I was just sick at the thought of chrome plating this awesome piece of se history.

The build is about two years earlier than my involvement in bmx back in the day so I struggled somewhat trying to get the part selection right. Still not sure if I have it where I want it but, it's close.

Thanks guys.

Some things I'm not set on.....

The tech 3 lever. Is it too new for an 81/82 build?

The pads. When did the nylon velcro pads come in to use? Should this frameset have the vinyl snap pads?

The tires. If my desired timeframe is 81/82, are the tires too old? I'd love to find some IRC comp 2 type tread tires.

The thing is, if I had acquired this f&f during my childhood in 83-85, it would have been built with the tech 3 lever, the Kashimax aero, the nylon pads and tioga comp 3 tires.

Also, I have a couple pair of 1981 Ashtabula black phosphate cranks in 7.5 inch size. I'm wondering if those would work better on this bike? Again, my childhood crank of choice would have been the 401's.

Anyhow, any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly valued.

I dig it the way it is. Seems correct to me. I prolly woulda used a flat Kashimax seat on this but do dig Kash Aero's too.

Why would anyone want to ruin that finish is beyond my pay grade.

Nice job, I would not change a thing.

And Hays I did not need to read what is going on south of your belt line.

Sah-wheat Quad Rob!!!!

I would like to see it with a HKK smoker chain on it...the rest looks awesome!!!

Did you take it for a ride yet??  I have a 82 non-looptail chromo and just picked up a 80 looptail and cannot wait to ride it and see if i feel any major differences.

I rode it for about 25 miles last year in a similar configuration. Also rode it all week at the reunion show a few years back. It's a nice riding bike.
