S.Brothers 1,025 Posted October 23, 2014 Ok, some of us have been discussing SE Bashers on Facebook, for obvious reasons we need to have the info here. So... if you have some information to share, or can help us consolidate the salient points from old conversation here or elsewhere, please feel free to copy and paste. It is not mandatory, but if possible please cite the sources of your information and if it's a magazine, the publication and date would be great. If you don't have that info... post what you have anyway please.
S.Brothers 1,025 Posted October 23, 2014 There are 3 versions of the Basher: 1) Mild steel we'll tentatively date to 79. 2) The Race Inc RA7 style in 82, 3) hi tensile 1010 Murray in 83ish. The Team Murray made one was a X20 frame with SE decal (per Brian Hays: http://www.bmxsociety.com/topic/27189-se-racing-re-murray-licensed-se-products/?p=227904) The Murray/SE Bashers were re-stickered and sold at Pep Boys. (per Sean Ewing via Mike Devitt) This photo is from Sean Ewing, posted in this 2008 thread: http://www.bmxsociety.com/topic/27189-se-racing-re-murray-licensed-se-products/?hl=basher Sean provided these pics in old threads and they are probably the only photos with all versions that exist - so that's something. S.Brothers 1,025 Posted October 23, 2014 There are two principle versions of the Basher down tube decal. The "cloud" or "explosion" and the other which just has the Basher drop shadow font. Here's the Drop Shadow: Here's the cloud or explosion: So... which decal goes with what version of the Basher? Good question, we seem to have examples of all 3 frames stickered in both versions. Did they come from the factory like that? We don't know. If you have info... let us know.
S.Brothers 1,025 Posted October 23, 2014 RA7 style Basher shown with both versions of the Basher decals
S.Brothers 1,025 Posted October 23, 2014 SE x Murray press release and ads The ad spread is from BMX Bugle, sorry but no date was attributed to either.
SHADESSEAN 29 Posted October 25, 2014 these Bashers have the same geometry as a looptail Quadangle
Brian Hays 654 Posted October 27, 2014 In regards to the Race Inc RA7 version of the Basher (the second style) In 1982 Race Inc was overstocked on the RA7 and RA24 frames and were ready to replace the RA7 with the RA10 for 1983 so SE took a bunch of the RA7 frames and decal-ed them as Bashers and the RA24's as SE Maulers. The next year SE used those same names and decals on the Team Murray made bikes.
Brian Hays 654 Posted October 27, 2014 Sean, how many of each style do you still own?

OLDSKOOLPK 124 Posted October 28, 2014 I would like to see and know if a chocolate brown Basher is floating around!!! That chrome one Brian is the shit!!! I have a NOS red Basher on the shelf but you all have seen plenty of pics already of that. Also, 3 versions of the Basher decals, cloud and two colors. S.Brothers 1,025 Posted October 28, 2014 Post a pic of the 3rd version, Jon. I also noticed that all the RA7 style Bashers start with RA5XXX I am utterly confident that NO ONE has ever noticed that - I am the first one. Certainly no one from the East Coast has ever noticed that. Sorry dullards, be more observant.
OLDSKOOLPK 124 Posted October 28, 2014 Haha! Silly West Coaster and their assumptions..... Hehe!
S.Brothers 1,025 Posted October 28, 2014 yeah... for the record, folks... Jon noticed the serial pattern. But let's see the 3rd decal style, Jon.
OLDSKOOLPK 124 Posted October 29, 2014 Just color differences.... Not styles...whoops, sorry if anyone thought there was another design. Cloud design: I have only seen in one color like above, the other design, I have in blue/brown, white/brown and what looks to be clear/gold.
Brian Hays 654 Posted October 29, 2014 Stole this from Danny Ibara on FB. You can see that the frame geometry is the same, as Sean stated.
S.Brothers 1,025 Posted October 30, 2014 Sean said Quadangle
Brian Hays 654 Posted October 30, 2014 Sean said Quadangle I think he meant PK. I saw somewhere where Scot said they were the geometry of the loop PK. Sean?
Brian Hays 654 Posted October 30, 2014 Also, the ad with Scots pic says they are available in blue, red and chocolate brown. Never seen a brown Basher. Wonder if chrome replaced brown before production. Ive seen a couple chrome ones.
Brian Hays 654 Posted October 30, 2014 Found this in an old thread.
S.Brothers 1,025 Posted October 30, 2014 Brown had to have been a tough color to sell kids. It looks dope on early SE's... but I have to think that's looking at it from an adult perspective and appreciating the history etc... I'm not sure I'd have been stoked on that as a kid, tan or bad bad leroy brown. I would have hated it at 12 to 15.
Brian Hays 654 Posted October 30, 2014 Ya, me too.
84pk 1 Posted November 12, 2014 Did someone say Basher... My RA7 version has a sn that begins with RA49xxx. It was purchased from the original owner in GA but had TRX forks on it. While most start with a 5 this one does not. I have a red mild steel one as well with the shadow down tube decal like Jon's. The rear triangles on the mild steel is nearly identical to my 81 loop quad. I date this chrome one and the red one as an 81. A long long long time ago a guy named Brian from SoCal was selling a ton of SE stuff. You old timers might remember his last name but those brain cells are dead for me. Anyway he had an RA10 frame stickered as a Basher. I never saw a pic of it and have never seen one mentioned again. I believe it is possible but again have seen no proof.
OLDSKOOLPK 124 Posted November 12, 2014 That would be the infamous Brian Henson.....I still have some pics of a line up of loop quads and a few other SE pics of his....I will have to dig but I know I have them! Nice stuff Mike! Your SE collection is wicked....on the computer screen and in person!
