I smell an SE Bikes STR-1 retro cruiser

Recommended Posts

Todd has been having fun with teaser pics for the past week. Here is the quote from the picture Steve posted above, this morning of April 1st. (now that I type that out, people could think questionable thoughts) But the photos look real to me.

"For those that know, "know." Full reveal coming tomorrow of the Stu Thomsen Replica bike. The STR.... Part of SE's "40 Years of Radness" celebration. Limited edition. Individually numbered. Available this summer"

Here are some other teasers he posted...

I don't know why this surprises me, but it does.

It's a 29r.

Actually, me not liking Retro's, Im ok with this 29"er. Would be cool to ride. Im sure they will be $1000. The whole point in the retro shit was affordable RIDERS, and now all the SE retros are selling second hand for ridiculous money.

I agree Brian. The whole 'retro' thing seems to target a niche group.

Of course Stu is gonna be a huge draw. I'm sure that thing rides great but so does my Schwinn beach cruiser. LOL

I'm not sold on them, the flavour seems some what diluted to me, each to their own.

I had a chance to see them in person this past weekend in Florida. Here are some pics and paperwork for them.

Whole both will be limited #'s, they will sell quick and I'm sure they will slung on eBay for more $.

The Buff was cool but I'm not digging the padset, that was more of a Hutch kinda thing (don't ya think??)

anybody have a non-drive side detail of the "cradle"?  Profile and up close, I don't know if Ive seen a good shot of that.

The one I posted above is a nice shot of the non-drive side. Anything you're particularly looking for Steve? I can dig through the pics that some other guys have posted on the event page.

LMK! :)

I am specifically wanting to see how the BB shell sits in the cradle.  Is it flush against the down tubes / stays or is it sort of mounted in there, or what?  Your photo is close to what I want to see, and does appear to have the bb shell welded onto the tubes, but some of the undercarriage views made it seem like the bb was raised up a bit.  Might have been an illusion.

ehh its alright I guess, but why another 29" BMX? I don't even understand that whole thing... Whatever, I guess I'm not part of their target market anyway.

Lionel, I did ask Todd Lyons and he said that 26 and 29 inches have been the top sellers for them, it seems that the "old" dudes just want to cruise. Both bikes look pretty nice but I'm not in the target audience either. ;)

what's done is done, and I'm not trying to harp on it, but I'd say nearly anyone who'd buy a 29", would have bought a 26" version.  The reverse however is not true... many who would buy a 26" would never go up to 29".  I think it looks good though.  I'll take Ewing's for a ride some time... he's bound to get one. ;)

Anyone else think the chain stay angle looks a tad weird though? I get why, it just seems out of place for a BMX style bike to have dropouts much higher than the bottom bracket.

To me that was always one of the things that differentiated a BMX from a dragster/stingray type frame because they raised the bottom bracket above the dropout and so the angle went the other way. Even a Kos was about horizontal so it didn't stand out like that STR 29er.

Steve, does the 7th photo in this post give you a better view?

Us old guys would like the bigger ride. In process of figuring how to order one in sync with my SS check. I'm going to send you a video of my 82 CW cruiser. That would be the only 26" I'd want over that SE thing.
