Number Plates - Dating & Era Guide, Haro Type 2 etc

Recommended Posts

I was trying to remember the other day, when exactly Haro Type 2 came out.

Just found this product profile from June 81, Super BMX

It would be cool if we could could do a time line of all... maybe we have done it before.  Not sure.

**changed the title to cover all plates

This Cam plate was on the opposite page of the same magazine - June 1981, Super BMX

What the heck, we'll make this a more general plate thread.

Was Series 1 first? Can't be I suppose as these resemble the first hand cut plates...

Big series 1 fan myself.

Series One came after the type 2... wasn't long though.  I'll be on the lookout for ads and announcements.

Also, though the above Type 2 press release was in June 81, Super... this add for the Haro Bolt plate was still running in June 81 (same month and year BMX Plus)

Haro seems to have kept them all available for a while.

But the type 2 repops are around in multiple versions from various sources.  Including recently this garbage from Malaysia.

From bottom to top - I wanna say roughly

81 type 2

82 series one

83 series 1B

84 tech

84 flo

In the pic and I wish I owned... A lightning bolt plate (80) would be below the type 2 - and a factory plate below that (79) and a hand made Jammie before that (78)

These are all ishes, as one model may have came out a little late in a yr for holiday sales and the like or there abouts.

Steve, A funny thing about the Holeshot number plates, at one time they were a co-sponsor of the JMC Factory Team. Though short lived (maybe 2-3 Nationals), there was a huge mention in Bicycles & Dirt about the deal and showed a bunch of 'pics' of DY running the plate.

There's like 3 gens of this plate that I'm aware off

This is a 1st gen 1 the mesh is steel painted chicken wire

The next gem was also steel but more of a diamond or waffle pattern

Third was nylon mesh if I'm not mistaken

Also little details like the decal was placed prior to the rivets on the early ones - so it's basically riveted on as well

Later models the decal was placed after the riveting so the decal lays over the rivets

The numbers made for them also have 2 gens as well ---- plain number with clear(white) rivets and branded number (logo) with black rivets

Thanks TrulyOdd. I read the article and was like I swear I ran a flo panel on my 83 Quad. Now I believe I'm remembering correctly.

In 81 Im pretty sure I raced a stickerless Cam plate late in the year and the custom Haro plate early in the year.

This picture sucks but I met Bob Haro at the Worlds and he made me 2 per my request. I thought an all black plate would be bitchin. He cut and pasted the plate together then clearcoated it or something. You could only see the seams if you looked closely but they wouldnt show up in a race shot.

Sorry best picture I have of the custom plate. man wish I saved one of them or the letter from Bob/Packaging etc. Or a darn picture of the plate. I added the BMXA stickers.

Here’s my Haro plate from 79/80. When I bought it new it had the lightning bolt sticker face. I can’t remember why I peeled it off.
