Just This Old Panda

Recommended Posts

I was showing this to Chromey and he mentioned you guys might get a kick out of it. So here it is...

A while back a local buddy of mine and super OG BMX guy hand made me a 70's MX style oval number plate.  Which was AWESOME.  But i had no home for it other than my fireplace mantle.  It just didn't look right on a RL20II or a Haro Sport  LOL

Anyhow, after much thought, it only made sense to build an entire bike so i would have something to hang the number plate on and do it some justice.

So I hit up the same buddy and after some discussion, I ended up with his Panda and a great jumping off point for a mid 70's race build, which i've kinda wanted to do for a bit anyhow.

The downhill triple tree fork is insanely radical.  The story behind the fork is that it was found in the dumpster at Panda years and years ago.  An Italian saddle i'm guessing was off big sis's 10-speed?  and some beautiful blue bars, Race Inc?

So!  Here she is.  My first legit 70's BMX Race build and the newest, most unique additional to a FULL ON 80's Freestyle Line up.  :)

I always get such a kick out of seeing the California bicycle license plate sticker! That is going to be a cool build. Love it...

Thanks man.  I'm leaving that Cali sticker on there.  Matches the bars great! :) Well, and those forks!  I don't think we did a lot of downhill racing here in Kansas ;) lol

Dig the forks. Had them on one of my Panda’s bitd. The frame is rad too....you don’t see many of that model in chrome.

Looking forward to seeing it built.

nice Boombox too.

Thanks everybody. I’m very happy to have it and get away from my normal builds. Been geeking out on a lot of the older 70’s era bikes lately.

I was pretty stoked about the forks - feel like they take the rig up a notch.

The chrome on the frame isn’t great. But I’m keeping it OG. The fork is in a bit worse shape though. I need to figure out how I’m going to approach that.

Awesome! Truly Odd, wasn’t your first bike a Panda? I seem to recall that epic Christmas pic or am I hallucinating?

Yea. My first 4 (maybe 5) bikes were Panda’s.

Time to blow it apart and get to cleaning.

I’m torn on the fork. My “survivor” instincts say to leave it.

But the kid side in my says redo it in Matte Black as the chrome is pretty dang rough.

I'm really unsure about refinishing the forks. The pitted chrome give it somewhat character and I quite like the way they look. And at this point I'm a bit reluctant to say "It's your bike, do what you want" cause it could actually kill everything that's cool about it.

Ran across some wheels this weekend. Was looking for something with a drum brake. But these popped up for a steal locally. Thought I would try them on. As it sits. I’m not much feeling the yellow mags with the blue bars. Which I thought I would like. We will see. I’ve got a few other things lined up. Think I’ll mock it up and see how it looks.

A few things I’m still gonna change up. But wanted to get it together and see how it looked. Going to swap pedals. Maybe chainring bolts if I can hunt down some era correct ones. And I’m going to find some Swallow tires for those Motomags.
