Well yesterday was my 1st official ride for this season - at the annual Englishtown auto swap meet - so I wanted to have something different and special this yr. for the sake of conversation. I've always had a bit of a secret desire to build one of those "lightest bike ever" builds, but never knew how'd I'd approach it .... Those sort of builds usually end up being mini or expert builds and quite frankly I don't normally build for show or the sake of model building, I build functional, sizable and ridable stuff, so I wanted to build a full on Pro sized bike, but without losing any strength or durability. Well a couple yrs back I happened on this bike via an int'l ebay browsing session (before you could just hit the worldwide search button) and as a result ended up with this hidden banger delivered to my home for less then most stems on the market these days. I learned of these frames only from recent yrs in the collecting game - though I had heard of the brand within the road biking world, I never realized they had made a BMX model in the early 80s, but then how could I know, seeing how they were never really offered stateside (Peugeot also sold them under they're brand name intended for int'l sale but they never really made it to selling further then Europe/Aus). So to be quite honest - these aren't just rare in those parts, they are all but non-existant in these.... Now having found a frame as starting point my project plans starting to get drawn up - HERES the TWIST - if building one of the lightest pro sized offerings for the time wasn't hard enough, since the bike was of European design, I wanted to keep it as European in nature and style as I possibly could ---- we see them building our brands all the time, but rarely do they see any of us building one of theirs. So without further delay - here is my entry into the lightest pro build for the early-mid era 80s ever built - all parts and finishes are in original condition and state (albeit faded or worn) some parts were recycled from the original, the rest were sourced specifically in keeping with euro standards and trends. In this corner, Weighing in at a whopping 18 lbs. 6 oz. We have : 1982-84 Vitus Pro (French made aluminum, lugged and bonded, aircraft grade epoxy to reduce weight and eliminate weld seams - hands down the lightest frame for its time) Hope you guys can dig it - even if you don't quite understand it - lol
