I was the recipient of an intervention today. Scott Towne saw I was potentially at risk, and like a true friend, he spoke right up. Apparently the old axiom is true... Bros don't let s.bros use Oakley 3's. But it's ok, man... I know what I'm doing. I know, I know... they all say that. But I'm different. I mean it's not everyone that can legitimately get away with using a grip shaped like a cobra's head. Believe me, I do realize that they have no place on most bikes. If you are so tired you need a palm rest on your bars, well... maybe you should just have a seat on the couch and not strain yourself. I get it. Actually what was going on with this design? It's not good looking, like I said earlier, Oakley 3's lack all aesthetic grace. But hey... you have to be steeped in the rules, and know the aesthetic parameters of vintage bmx composition to break the rules. I feel like I'm there man... and besides that, I lived in Asia for years, I've spent many a day swaying back and fourth in front of baskets with my fellow snake charmers. I know the ways of ophiolatry... I know what incense and how much milk to offer to the Nagas. What I'm getting at is that I've earned it, man. But seriously... Oakley 3's are a tough one. I'm not sure they have a legitimate place on a race bike. I mean younger kids... let's say 12 an under, could get away with it somehow. Otherwise, you have to be a weird older dude... probably a dad in cruiser class. Well, that's pretty much my demographic at this point... so there's that. Plus... somehow that cobra head also looks like some sort of a wing... so maybe it works on an SE product. That said, there is one grip that is hands down worse than Oakley 3's... well, one besides the Fujian Oakley 3 knock off. No... I'm talking about the abomination that is A'me Fini Grips. I mean COME ON... a freaking grip you have to have instructions to assemble? A bunch of parts that a toddler could choke on? Man that's nothing short of ridiculous. I know some will defend them (Looking at you Marcos) but that's the opposite of good design when you take the simplest thing possible and turn it into a "much assembly necessary" puzzle. Bad gimmick... I mean let's keep it real. AmIright? Discuss. I do admit though, with the 3's... even if you can rationalize their use. They are ugly. But again... maybe they're so bad their good.
